Sunlight is painting leaves on the canvas this morning. I have that smashed looking sleepy face that's been compounding over a few days. It's going to be a good day. We're harvesting some produce at the house this morning for our hosts - cukes, cherry tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, romas, and squash. Damn autumn, you're good.

One is not enough

Things it would be nice to have two of: lanterns, tarps, and tables. More to come.

Day 2: rainy day

Waking up in the middle of the night to rain dripping on your "roof" 5 feet above you and being dry and warm in a sleeping bag is awesome. Of course you woke up because you have to pee and that sucks but oh well. It's been raining for about 13 hours here which is excellent for the plants and the ground and the critters. Generally in Northern Cali the rains don't start until November. It's a pleasant surprise to have one good rain in Sept/Oct so that everything isn't so very dry and combustible. Our tent has tiny leaks because we haven't put up all the supporting poles that will keep the canvas taught, but so far it hasn't leaked on our heads.

I woke up to oatmeal and eventually a good hour of yoga and some stretching. It's quite impressive how much heat the body can generate in such ... View Post »

Day 1: setting up camp

This morning we took a tour of the homestead with our hosts. Karl and Melinda bought the property, some 43 acres in Annapolis, CA, 9 years ago and have been steadily adding buildings and animals and plants every year,

We met the goats and chickens, took a peek at the tiny orchard - raspberries are popping up everywhere - and checked out the various buildings they've put up - a shed, meditation room, office, chicken coop, and compost toilet. Then we took a walk through the garden and gawked at the collard greens, the incredibly sweet and tender kale, abundance of cherry tomatoes, squash and pumpkin patches, hot and sweet peppers, eggplant, cucumbers and runner and pole beans. Which really made me miss Mom's garden. Ahhh. But it's amazing to be around growing food again. The kale was ... View Post »

Predators to look up at our camp site in Annapolis: scorpions, black bears, rattlesnakes, mountain lions, pot growers with guns, big ants, spiders that have ground cobwebs. I am serious scurred of snakes and spiders and potheads with shotguns. Anytime is a good time to get over a phobia right?

Well hello, beautiful

Who knew that the road at the end of the earth would be this beautiful? It all started when we stuck our toes into the Pacific up in Oregon a few months back. It was so cold I could have sworn someone tried to light my feet on fire the way they burned. I hobbled back to the car. That was the Pacific? A man at a campground cooked us a beautiful crab which we smashed with a wooden mallet and sucked out the small, sweet bits of flesh. Then gorged on the claws. There were tiny shore towns all along the coast of Oregon, gloomy and grey and static against the slick black rocks and jagged bluffs.

Monterey. Caramel. I've heard of these places but what do I know of them? They're on the California coast, man. Yea, no shit. I realize that now. I realized that as we drove, correction, as we ... View Post »

WWOOFing through Cali

We have officially proclaimed ourselves WWOOFer to all of California. We've been trying to find a place in the woods to live in for a few months now, and both our work schedules and also the restrictions of living on forest/park land has made it a somewhat ridiculous process. What we think we want is simple:

A wooded/forest area with relatively moist air/soil that has some undergrowth where we can park our enormous 150 lb tent at the edge of a meadow. The forest would have some deciduous and have some pine and be of relatively moderate elevation (2k-3k). There'd be a stream or bubbling brook or small lake or some such thing nearby where we could wash our face, collect water and fish without getting some gnarly bugs in our intestines. There'd be bears and snakes and mountain lions for ... View Post »

Our radio only plays classical stations with the smarmy radio guy. And it opens beers. Awesome.
